Legal Assistance
There are times when constituent requests cannot be resolved with government assistance and legal assistance becomes a necessity. The Hawaii State Bar Association webpage contains a wealth of information on legal assistance; please click the image for the complete list. Some of the options include:
Lawyer Referral & Information Service (LRIS)
Members of the public seeking services of an attorney may call, fax or email the Hawaii State Bar Assoc. (HSBA) Lawyer Referral & Information Services staff. After assessing the issues, the individual is given the name & contact information of two (2) attorneys who may be contacted. It is then up to the individual and the attorney contacted to form an attorney-client relationship. You can call or email the Lawyer Referral & Information Service panel: 808.537.9140 or LRIS@hsba.org.
Legal Line
Every Wednesday evening from 6pm to 7pm attorneys are available via telephone to provide legal information. The volunteer licensed pro bono attorneys try to ascertain the issues or concerns and refer clients to the appropriate HSBA staff, legal service provider, or government agency. Legal advice is not provided and an attorney-client relationship is not formed. The Legal Line number is 537.1868.
Access to Justice Rooms
Centers on court premises for self-represented litigants have been established through a partnership with the Hawaii State Judiciary, the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii and the HSBA. Justice Rooms, which provide legal advice, have been established at the Honolulu District Court and the Kapolei Family Court Complex. Trained volunteer pro bono attorneys provide advice in limited areas of self-represented litigants.
